Kauai Mokihana Festival - September 18-24, 2012

Kaua'i Mokihana Festival is a week-long celebration, Sept. 16-22, 2012, of Hawaiian culture and includes educational lectures, music and hula competitions at locations around the island of Kaua’i

This year's theme is Year of Na Kamali’i.

 

Sunday, September 16, 10 a.m. – Hale Pule – Hawaiian Church Service

Admission Fee: Donation Accepted, Kapa’a First Hawaiian Church

 

Welcome all as we celebrate with special music; even a little hula now and then in both English and the Hawaiian languages.  This event is held at the historic Kapa’a First Hawaiian Church founded by Queen Deborah Kapule in 1879.  KMF volunteers and supporters provide the special music for this service that is open to all residents and visitors.  After the service, all are invited to join in refreshments.     

 

Monday, September 17, 7 p.m. – The Kaua’i Composer’s Contest and Concert

Admission Fee: $15 in advance / $20 at door, KCC Performing Arts Center

 

Celebrating 27 years, this event encourages the composition of new music through its carious categories.  These categories are: Hawaiian, Contemporary Hawaiian, Open, Professional and Youth (13-20 years old).  Trophies and cash prizes are awarded.  Participants in this contest are inspired by sharing their personal musical creations with the Island’s people and visitors. 

 

Tuesday, September 18, 9 a.m. – Children’s/Youth Music Competition

Admission Fee: Donation accepted, KCC Performing Arts Center

 

A growing and exciting event that allows students in the Hawaiian Immersion School Programs to compete musically by grades with songs in the Hawaiian language. This year’s event features songs selected by each participating schools. You must inquire about tickets in advance  Space is limited. 

 

Tuesday, September 18, 6 p.m. – Under the Palms at Wailua Concert

Admission Fee: $15 in advance / $20 at door, Aloha Beach Hotel

 

Join us as we celebrate our Hawaiian culture through hula, music, arts and crafts.  Featuring Lady Ipo Kahaunaele-Ferreria and Na Hoaloha and hula performances from selected hula halau on Kaua’i.  This popular event starts at 6pm and entertainment continues to 9pm.  Doors open at 5pm.  Food and beverage will be available for purchase.  

 

Wednesday, September 19, 5pm - Presentation – Featuring Kealoha the Magnificent Poet

Admission Fee: Donation accepted, Place: TBA

You won’t want to miss this great opportunity to witness one of Hawaii’s most talented and internationally recognized as a poet and storyteller. Kealoha graduated with honors from MIT with a degree in Nuclear Physics and a minor in Writing. He is the founder of HawaiiSlam, Youth Speaks Hawai`i (2-Time International Champions), and First Thursdays (the largest registered slam poetry competition in the world with an average attendance of 500+). His work was featured throughout the world including the Nuyorican poets cafe (New York City), the Bowery Poetry Club (New York City), the Green Mill (Chicago), the Schiffbau (Zurich, Switzerland), the Rokerij (Amsterdam, Netherlands), the Bienal do Ibirapuera (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and the 2007 NFL Pro Bowl halftime show.

 

Thursday, September 20, 6 p.m. - Hula Competition: Solo/Group Kahiko Nei

Admission Fee: $15 in advance / $20 at door, Kaua’i Beach Resort

This event demonstrates a creative and unique idea in hula in the ancient style (kahiko) with a slight twist of Kaua'i flavor. Newer chants are encouraged by judges. Chants that are 10 years old or less get five bonus points. Bonus points are given to chants 20 years or younger.

 

Friday, September 21, 6 p.m. - Hula Competition: Group `Auana

Admission Fee: $15 in advance / $20 at door, Kaua’i Beach Resort

This is the second evening of hula competition and features Auana, modern hula. This group competition allows the hula school (halau) to use traditional, borrowed or newly created implements to add a "contemporary" flavor to hula. This event encourages the ingenuity and creativeness of our kumu hula. Categories include Kaikamahine, Keikikane, Wahine, Kane, Kupuna and Hui/`Ohana. Come early, as Kaua`i's Aloha Festival's Royal Court will attend this event in full regalia with ceremonial entrance.

 

Saturday, September 22 begins at 12:00 p.m. Noon. - Hula Competition Solo `Auana & Finale

Admission Fee: $15 in advance / $20 at door, Kaua’i Beach Resort

The finale cannot be missed. First, solo competition enchants the audience. Then, all the competing halau and audience wait breathlessly to see the winners announced by the judges. This year, special solo awards are offered by Hawai’i Community Foundation.
