Choreography Award Winner

Kaua'i Composers Contest & Concert - Winners announced

At the Kauai Mokihana Festival event
held Monday 9/24/07, Kaua'i Community College Performing Arts Center winners received the following awards:

Composer Fred Aki (2nd from left) won the first place in the professional category for his song “Kaulana 'o Kaua'i” at the 2007 Kaua'i Composers Contest Monday evening. Kaua`i Mokihana Festival contemporay Hawaiian cultural events continue through the week, with hula performances 6 pm Friday 9/28, and the hula finale at noon on Saturday at the Kauai Marriott ballroom.

A crowd pleasing performance of an original song “Heart and Soul” by two young composers Joni Keamoai and Doric K. Yaris won the “People's Choice” award at the 2007 Kauai Composers Concert and Contest. ( Joni is first girl singing (on left) on mic w/black shirt / Doric is on drums)

Lovely Leilani Bond (in photo below) sings the original composition by Kale Kaui, which won first place in the Hawaiian Cateogory of the Kaua'i Composers Contest Monday evening. The song by Kaui went on to wind the Hawaiian Language award and the Lyrical Content award at the KCC Performing Arts Center.

Laurie Williams performs the first place winning song “Crazy About You”. Williams wowed the judges in the Open category winning first and second place for her original compositions and went on to receive special Performance Award and the award for the highest score for a musical compostion at the 2007 Kauai Composer Contest Monday evening at the KCC Performing Arts Center.

Kaua`i Mokihana Festival continues with hula perfomances 6 pm Friday 9/28, and noon on Saturday at the Kauai Marriott ballroom.

This hula competition features group performances of Auana, modern hula and allows performers to use traditional, borrowed or newly created implements to add a contemporary flavor the hula. This event encouraged the ingenuity and creativeness of our kumu hula. The Aloha Festival's Royal Court will attend this event, and the pageantry is worth seeing. From 2 pm to 9 pm local crafters are located around the hotel walkway for great Hawaiian-style gifts

The Kaua`i Mokihana Festival Craft Fair

Enjoy annual three-day Kaua'i Mokihana Festival Hula Competition, a craft fair will be offered by the Mālie Foundation at the Kaua`i Marriott Resort . Over 30 vendors and tables can be found in the covered area around the ballroom area.

This is an opportunity to shop before and during intermissions of the popular contemporary Hawaiian cultural event. The Craft Fair will be open:

• Thursday, Sept. 27 – 2 pm to 9 pm (hula event begins 6 pm)
• Friday, Sept 28 – 2 pm to 9 pm (hula event begins 6 pm)
• Saturday, Sept. 29 – noon to 6 pm (hula event begins noon)

Find local-made products, including woven lauhala hats, specialized jewelry, baskets, Hawaiian design clothing, decorative objects of art, shell lei -- many crafts found only on Kaua`i. Event coordinator, Edee Bandmann, said, “Vendors at this craft fair exemplify the festival’s 2007 theme ‘Year of the ‘Ohana’ as most offer products that their family make together. You will truly find local products and product makers at this event.”

Kaua'i Mokihana Festival Hula Competition Results

POIPU – Dancing to the song “Aloha Hawai'i Ku'u One Hanau”, Naomi Kanaulu Tabonair won was awarded Mrs. Mokihana Hula at the 20th annual Kauai Mokihana Festival's hula competition at Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa. The Saturday September 23 finale included the Royal Court procession into the ballroom preceded the Solo 'Auana Hula Competition, which was the culmination of a week long celebration of contemporary Hawaiian culture.

“The international interest in hula and Hawaiian culture is amazing,” said Kalama. “A large group of hula dancers from Japan will exhibit in this year's event. Their costumes and performance are entertaining crowd pleasers.” One group, Hula Halau Kahula O Hawai'i, who won first place in the Japan Kauai Mokihana Festival last March, competed in the Kauai Mokihana Festival for the first time.

Judges for the hula competition include: Ipolani Vaughan, Kaho`okele Crabbe, Leialoha Lynn Amina. Choreography judge: James Kimo Auwae. Hawaiian language judge: Ku'ualdranui Kauli'a..

2006 Kaua`i Composers Contest Winners

Flores and Aki Top Winners of Kaua`i Composers Contest

Chanel Flores composed the song “Kalalau” that won the Na Po'e (People's Choice) awarded by the audience in attendance at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center Monday night. The Kaua'i Composers Contest and Concert featured thirteen original songs in four categories by composers from Kauai.

Flores was inspired to write about the song because her great grandmother was born in the Kalalau Valley. Judges awarded this song the Commercial Potential award, Best Lyrical Content, and first place in the Contemporary Hawaiian category.

Fred Aki won the Performers award, first place Professional category, and received the award for highest score by the judges for his song “Wailua Nui Hoano” (Great Sacred Wailua). Aki was inspired to write his song by the changes he has witnessed over the last 25 years in the lower portion of the valley where the waters flow into the Pacific Ocean.

Aki's song pays tribute to the history of the Wailua area, and said, “I wonder what it would be like for our kupuna, our ancestors, who lived and walked in this valley contrasted with all the construction going on today in this area.” Historical documentation indicates the ancient significance of Wailua is shown through the legends back to the thirteenth century. The Wailua area was one of the most desirable places to live in ancient Hawaii. It was the home of the queens and kings, the alii, of Kaua'i. It was a famous place throughout Hawaii and in parts of Central Polynesia.

WORKSHOP #1 - Journey of the Legends of Ha`ena

This huka`i will focus upon traditional Hawaiian sites found on the north end of Kaua`i Island. Fascinating mo`olelo or oral traditions provide the basis of unique experiences that tell of ancient chiefs, gods and goddesses, ancient hula practices, spirituality and more. Inspired by countless chants and hula that have been orally transmitted from one generation to the next, the significance of these wahi kapu (sacred places) and wahi pana (celebrated places) continue to resonate today. Hawaiian protocol and practices are shared and expanded upon, along with the fascinating history, events, legendary personages and details of the primary functions of each of the sites. Sites that may be visited, viewed or elaborated upon include: Kilauea Crater, Halele`a, Hihimanu, Namolokama, Kaliko, Mamalahoa, Wai`oli, Waipa, Makahoa, Lumaha`i, Kealahula, Maniniholo Cave, Manoa, Naue, Wainiha, Na Pohaku O Piliwale, Pohakuloa, Pohakuakane, Limahuli, Waiakapala`e Cave, Waiakanaloa Cave, Makana, Ka Pali `Oahi O Makana, Kili`oe, Maunahou, Ka Ulu A Paoa Heiau Hula and Ke Ahu A Laka.

WORKSHOP # 2 - LECTURE: Temples for the Dance

Origins of Kaua`i’s Hula Traditions
Presented by Kehaulani Kekua, kumu hula
Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai

Hula is steeped in Hawaiian spirituality and belief. It was prevalent in the highest levels of temple ceremony and functions of archaic worship. Ka Ulu A Lono and Ka Ulu A Paoa are attributed as two of Kaua`i’s most prominent heiau that were fundamental in the primal establishment of hula as a spiritual practice and religious order. Through the sharing of illuminating histories and profiles of legendary figures and hula masters associated with these heiau, we will take a look at the ancient processes that shaped Kaua`i’s sacred hula traditions. How did these sites function in times past? What are the benefits of maintaining the cultural integrity and knowledge of these places? Our goal is to stimulate plateaus of hula consciousness by looking at the very basics of long standing rituals and rites, choreography and cultural routines that were established by our ancestors of long ago.

WORKSHOP #3 - Ka Huaka`i i Wailuanuiaho`ano

This huaka`i or Hawaiian cultural learning excursion highlights various cultural sites within the traditional ahupua`a of Wailua. Known poetically as Wailuanuiaho`ano or the “Great Sacred Wailua”, it was once the major center of political and spiritual activities on Kaua`i in ancient times. Created with the objective of preserving the Hawaiian practice of mo`olelo or storytelling through oral traditions, verses of a Hawaiian chant represent the various cultural sites visited on this unique cultural learning excursion. Hawaiian protocol and practices are shared and expanded upon, along with the fascinating history, events, legendary personages and details of the primary functions of each of the sites. Sites that may be visited, viewed or elaborated upon include: Hikinaakala Heiau, Hauola Heiau, Na Ki`i Pohaku (Petroglyph Stones), Kukui Heiau, Mahunapu`uone, `Alio, Malaeha`akoa Heiau, Holoholoku Heiau, Pohaku Ho`ohanau, Pohaku Piko, Nounou, Poliahu Heiau, Wai`ale`ale, Mauna Kapu, Kalehuawehe, Ka`ohala, Maka`iwa, Kuamo`oloaakane and more…

Kaua`i Mokihana Festival Celebrates 20 Years of Hula
Many Hula Halau Confirmed for 2006

Halau from Japan, Oahu and Kaua`i have confirmed to participate in the 20th anniversary Kauai Mokihana Festival's three-day hula event. “A key to any successful event is consistency, both in quality and reliability,” said Nathan Kalama, founder of the Kaua`i Mokihana Festival. Focusing on contemporary Hawaiian culture, this year's festival features the following halau:

Other halau are just now getting their paperwork and time commitments submitted, so there may be more confirmed before the week-long September 17-23 festival. These hula performers will compete September 21 through 23, at the Grant Hyatt Kaua`i Resort & Spa ballroom.

In 1986, the hula competition was only kane, male, dancers. There was no sole male hula event in the state, so the festival developed this unique event. After several years, the public demand to see wahine, women, hula was strong, so the festival adapted. “Events should be allowed to grow and change. If something does not work, change `em,” Kalama said.

This year's theme, Kaua`i Sacred Sites, also features three workshops focusing on the ancient processes that shaped Kauai's sacred hula traditions, and other places historically important to the Hawaiian culture. These occur September 20 and 21, and reservations are recommended.

2005 Hula Results by Category

Kekaha, Kaua`i - Loyal festival goers and hula dancers let nothing deter them. Chanting the theme “Adjust, Come On, You Can Do It” the attendees and participants of the annual Kaua`i Mokihana Festival did not let a little power failure stop them from completing the hula competition at the Kekeha Neighborhood Center Saturday night. When the electric generator failed the third time at the hula mound, all just picked up and moved under the lit pavilion with barely a sign of complaint.

Gazing up at fluorescent bulbs instead of Kekaha stars, Rosemary Lokemele Kamana`o of Halau Pomaika`ikalani danced to the song “Palehua” which won her the 2005 title Mrs Mokihana Hula. Thomas Kawai Sellers of Halau Nawaipunalei is this year's Mr. Hula Auana who danced “He Aloha Ku`u Aina”.

Halau from Japan, Maui, `Oahu, and Kaua`i performed over three consecutive evenings last week, moving from two days at the Sheraton Kaua`i Poipu Resort to the Kekaha Neighborhood Center for the hula finale and ho`olaulea on Saturday. A complete listing of 2005 results is below:

PUHI – The profound lyrics of the song, Dynasty of the Sun, brought recognition from judges and the audience at the Kaua`i Mokihana Festival Composer's Contest and Concert Monday night at Community College Performing Arts Center. Heaped with trophies and prizes, poet and songwriter Keahi Felix won the contemporary Hawaiian category and the coveted Na Poe People's Choice award. Music for the song was composed by Edward Machado. The song was performed by a well-rehearsed and talented group that included singer "Lady 'Ipo" Kahaunaele-Ferreira, which received the award for Best Performance. Felix also won the highest score, the Lyrical Content award, and the Commercial Potential award.

David (Waveslide) Wilson's heartfelt musical tribute to his friend Muggs Stump won the first place in the Open Category, backed up by Rick Barnette on guitar and William Rash on trumpet.

Fred Aki won first place in the Professional category with his performance of a tribute to the island of Kaua`i Beauty Within. Lyrics include: Nani o Kaua`i, beauty of Kaua`i; rich and blessed by heaven; beauty oh so rare.

Promoting and recognizing composers on the island, the event is known for its camaraderie, with competing musicians often playing backup for others. Contest judges are last year's Professional category winner, Richard Beach; past Kauai Mokihana Festival board member, Doric Kaleonui Yaris; and KKCR radio host Kilipaki Vaughan. Maka and Evalani Herrod provided auditing services. Sponsors include A&B Foundation, Kukui`ula Development, Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Kauai Office of Economic Development.

Annual Youth Event Honors Queen Lili`uokalani

Students of the immersion and bilingual Hawaiian programs compete each year for prizes and recognition by participating in the annual Kaua`i Mokihana Festival Eo, E Lili`u song contest. Held at the Kaua`i Community College Performing Arts Center Tuesday, 9/20/05, the event honors Queen Lili`uokalani by performing her music. Songs must be from the “Queen's Songbook” or a song written for or about the monarch. All songs must be performed in `Olelo Hawai`i, Hawaiian language with no amplification. 2005 Poster

The Theme for 2005 is the "Year of the Hawaiian Endangered Species"

The art drawings in this year's Kaua`i Mokihana Festival poster and note cards were created by students at two schools on the island of Kaua'i Kanuikapono Public Charter School and Ke Kula Ni'ihau O Kekaha.

Emphasizing Hawai`ian endangered species as theme, each student choose his or her own subject to research. Artists from the Garden Island Arts Council Van Go! Project worked with students to interpret the subject matter into images. Judges selected the best works with a focus on environmental education. Funds generated support the Malie Scholarship fund, dedicated to educational activities.

The poster winner is Raynella Dela Cruz, age 16 for Pua The Whale of Ke Kula Ni'ihau O Kekaha.

How the Theme Became More than an Idea:

The art in this year's Kaua`i Mokihana Festival note cards and poster was created by students at two schools on the island of Kaua'i: Kanuikapono Public Charter School and Ke Kula Ni'ihau O Kekaha. Students researched Hawaiian endangered species and chose their own subject. Artists from the Garden Island Arts Council Van Go! Project worked with the keiki to interpret the subject matter into images. Judges from Kaua`i Mokihana Festival board, Rene Tokuda and Marlys Matheus, and artist Eve Solomon selected the best works. The poster winner is Raynella Dela Cruz, age 16, for "Pua The Whale".

Each year, the Kaua`i Mokihana Festival celebrates the Hawaiian culture and values throughout the island. Grants, large and small, have continued to come in to support our Festival, in addition to corporate sponsors and many thousands of in-kind donations and volunteers over the years. Hawaiian Church Services: (September 18, 10 a.m.) No admission fee - All Welcome - Kapa`a First Hawaiian Church, 4-1325 Kuhio Hwy
Welcome all as we celebrate with special music; even a little hula now and then in both English and the Hawaiian languages. This event is held at the historic Kapa`a First Hawaiian Church founded by Queen Deborah Kapule in 1879. KMF volunteers and supporters provide the special music for this service that is open to all residents and visitors. After the service, all are invited to join in refreshments.

Hawaiian Instrumental Competition: (Sunday, September 18, 6 p.m. $10 per ticket Admission - Hyatt Regency Kaua`i Resort
A unique musical experience that features Kaua'i's unique Hawaiian instrumental enthusiasts and practitioners. The competitionis for acoustic instruments. Location: The Poipu Grill & Bar, sponsored by the Hyatt Regency Kaua`i Resort ($10 ticket). Contact # (808) 742-1234

Now in its 21^st year, this event encourages the composition of new music through its various
categories. These categories are: Hawaiian (must be in the Hawaiian language), Contemporary Hawaiian, Open, Professional and Youth (13-20 years old). Trophies and cash prizes are awarded. Participants in this contest are inspired by sharing their personal musical creations with the Island's people and visitors.

Hawai`i Endangered Species: Ho'okahi No Ka 'Aina a Me Na Kanaka / The land and the people are one
Presenter: Cha Smith /Marti Townsend.
This presentation focuses on the animals and plants that relate directly to the work done by KAHEA-The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance. Other endangered species are included, where they are, and what is needed to protect them. Learn about the Green Sea turtle, the Hawaiian Monk seal and the Wekiu bug and their relationship to Native Hawaiian culture.

Hula Competition: Solo/Group Kahiko Nei, (Thursday, September 22, 6 p.m. )
Admission Fee: $10 in advance, $15 at door/ Sheraton Kaua`i Resort, Poipu
This event demonstrates a creative and unique idea in hula in the ancient style (kahiko) with a slight twist of Kaua'i flavor. Newer chants are encouraged by judges. Chants that are 10 years old or less get five bonus points. Three bonus points are given to chants 25 years or younger.

Hula Competition: Group `Auana, (Friday, September 23, 6 p.m. )
Admission Fee: $10 in advance $15 at door- Sheraton Kaua`i Resort, Poipu
This is the second evening of hula competition and features Auana, modern hula. This group competition allows the hula school (halau) to use traditional, borrowed or newly created implements to add a "contemporary" flavor to hula.This event encourages the ingenuity and creativeness of our kumu hula. Categories include Kaikamahine, Keikikane, Wahine, Kane, Kupuna and Hui/`Ohana. Kaua`i's Aloha Festival Royal Court will attend this event. From noon on, local craft booths are located around the hotel walkway for great Hawaiian style gifts

Ho`olaule`a at Kekaha Neighborhood Center/Pavilion (Saturday, September 24; noon to 5 p.m.) Free Admission - canned good donation for Kaua`i Food Bank requested (not required)
This fun and healthy event pays tribute to Hawaii families. Craft and food booths open at noon. The Festival presents live music, great local food, and entertainment.

Hula Competition Solo `Auana (Finale at Kekaha Pavilion): (Saturday, September 24 - 5 p.m. to finale) Kekaha Neighborhood Center. Free Admission- 1 canned good donation for Kauai Food Bank requested (not required)
Experience the finest hula "hula under the moon" competition and award ceremony at Kekaha Pavilion on Kaua`i. The raised hula mound, located outside the Kekaka Neighborhood Center, is the perfect performance platform for this hula finale.
